FAQ

What is the Truth & Justice Project?

The Truth & Justice Project is an independent investigative organization dedicated to uncovering wrongful convictions, advocating for justice reform, and helping innocent people regain their freedom. We focus on post-conviction casework, especially in situations where there is new or overlooked evidence.

No, we are not affiliated with the Innocence Project or its state affiliates. While we share a common mission to correct wrongful convictions, the Truth & Justice Project is an independent initiative. We often work collaboratively with other justice-focused organizations but operate under our own processes and leadership.

We are not a Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU), which are typically part of District Attorney’s offices. However, we may interact with CIUs in the course of our investigations when necessary. Our role is independent and objective, allowing us to investigate without conflict of interest.

We primarily take on felony convictions where there is a credible claim of actual innocence. We prioritize cases with new evidence, questionable witness testimony, official misconduct, or other significant red flags. Each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Yes, we do consider DNA-based innocence claims, especially when DNA evidence has not been tested or was tested using outdated methods. However, we also take on non-DNA cases, which make up the majority of wrongful convictions.

We are not a law firm, but we partner with attorneys and law firms when legal representation is required. Our team specializes in investigations and case development to support litigation efforts.

We are a for-profit investigative firm. In some cases, services are provided at no cost or a reduced rate depending on the circumstances and potential impact of the case. We are committed to ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent justice.

Yes, we accept applications from family members, friends, or legal advocates. It’s helpful to include as much information and documentation as possible to support the claim.

To request assistance, individuals must complete our intake form and submit relevant case documents. Once received, our team conducts a preliminary review. If the case meets our criteria, we proceed with a full investigative assessment.

Every case is unique. Some cases require months of investigation, while others may take years. We aim to move as efficiently as possible while maintaining thoroughness and integrity.

You can support us by donating, volunteering, spreading awareness, or simply staying informed. Every contribution helps us fight for justice and prevent future wrongful convictions.
